2013 Bahrain Grand Prix Review

Welcome to the 4th race this season.. The 2013 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix held on the Bahrain International Circuit.. Just like the last couple of years, this year too there are a lot of protests in the region targeted against the race.. But Bernie being the man he is, decided the teams will race no matter what! Why confirm a race here when you know something like this will come up.. Well being the middle east there is obviously a lot of money involved so that could be a prime factor in making a decision..

Practice:
Bright and sunny skies welcomed the fans and F1 personnel to the BIC.. Practice 1 began and what a start it was for Ferrari.. The team looked really good and the results proved it.. Massa P1 and Alonso P2.. The rest of the pack were consistent from last race with Mercedes and Red Bull looking strong.. Button finished in P6 and the Force India's finished ahead of the shockingly slow Lotus cars.. Practice 2 quickly changed things around for Lotus with Kimi finishing in P1 followed by Webber, Vettel and Alonso.. On saturday morning in Practice 3, Ferrari and Alonso went on top again and things looked even better for them and things were heating up for qualifying, literally! Hamilton suffered a delamination on his left rear tyre and because of the gear box change he had a 5 place grid penalty.. And a special mention for Mark Webber who is competing in his 200th Grand Prix this weekend.. Keep it up mate!

Qualifying:

Q1 began with blistering pace from Alonso's Ferrari, he eventually set the fastest lap in Q1.. At the back of the grid the usual suspects in the form of Caterham and Marussia dropped out, Caterham looked very quick courtesy the new updates they brought in for this race. The other two who dropped out were Gutierrez and Maldonado.. The only surprise from Q2 was Grosjean not getting through to Q3..  The others who dropped out were the two Torro Rosso's, Hulkenburg, Bottas and Perez, who is still trying to find the rhythm in his Mclaren.. Force India managed to get both their cars into Q3.. The final 10 minute session began and I expected Vettel to put in the best lap but I was shocked after Rosberg set the fastest lap taking the second consecutive pole position for Mercedes.. The new kings of one lap pace? Too early to say.. Behind him as expected it was Vettel and Alonso.. Both contenders for Sunday's race.. Kimi's Lotus never found the pace it did in practice.. He qualified in 9th and will move up one position because of the penalty Hamilton got.. The two Force India's will start from 5th and 6th..  Looking good for them..

Race:

Rosberg on pole right alongside Vettel and in front of Alonso.. The start was AMAZING.. Alonso over took Vettel but it wasn't long before Vettel got past and started attacking Rosberg.. Bad start for Sutil as he had contact with Massa's Ferrari and suffered a Puncture and he fell back.. Hamilton fell behind Grosjean and Vergne also suffered puncture and was last after the first couple of laps.. It wasn't long before Alonso got past Rosberg whose tires were falling off the pace.. Di Resta had pace and got past Rosberg ..

Alonso had a uncommon problem wherein his DRS flap remained open and just wouldn't close, Schumi suffered the same problem in Canada that caused him to retire, Nando came into the pits and got that fixed... A couple of laps later he suffered from the same problem.. Not a good early stint for him..

Everyone except Di Resta  and Raikkonen pit by lap 15.. These two were leading the race with Vettel and Webber behind them.. Red Bull had good consistent pace throughout and were 1 and 2 after the first set of pit-stops.. Very Good first stint for Webber, moving up from 7th to 2nd..

First, and eventually the only, retirement came from Torro Rosso's Jean Eric Vergne who suffered an early puncture and never made up ground after that..

The two Mclaren's had a good fight between them for 7th and 8th and later moved up to 5th and 6th.. Thats the best the team can do unless there are some major retirements at the front of the field.. Di Resta had really good race pace and was in P2 at half race distance.. It was going to be a fight between him and Raikkonen for P3..

Ferrari were having an unimpressive race with Massa in 9th and Alonso in 12th at the half way mark.. Not a good weekend for the team.. The Mercedes team too didn't really have anything to be very happy about with their cars racing in 7th and 9th..

There was good fight for positions 5 through 8 between Button, Perez, Grosjean and Rosberg.. The two Mclaren's touching each other.. And Grosjean almost touching the back of Perez's Mclaren before passing Perez and later Button for P4 on lap 34..

Vettel was unbeatable.. He kept racing perfectly lap after lap.. Noone had a chance to even get close to him.. He had a lead of almost 30 seconds at one point of time.. This lead was just going to get bigger..

Raikkonen pit for what was going to be his last stop on lap 35.. Now it was a race to the finish and in his case a race for P3 or maybe even P2..

Webber pit for the last time and after that he never was on par with his first stint and dropped back.. Later on he had a fight with Hamilton for 5th.. Grosjean who was running in 2nd made his final stop and came out in 5th.. He was quick enough to hunt down Di Resta, whose tires were falling off the pace, for 3rd place.. Something that was not expected.. So now it was Vettel, Raikkonen and Grosjean top 3..

Alonso made a late charge and got past Button and Rosberg and then had a good fight with Perez for 7th but since he didn't have DRS he could not get past..

The battle between Hamilton and Webber wasn't over until the very last lap when Hamilton got past the Red Bull into turn 1 and maintained the advantage to the chequered flag.. Webber also lost out to Perez in the last lap and finally finished in 7th..

At the end of the 57th lap Sebastian Vettel took his 28th career victory, a really well deserved and a commanding victory.. He was followed by the two Lotus cars of Raikkonen and Grosjean.. The top three exactly same like last year's Bahrain Grand Prix.. A bit of a Deja Vu moment there..

Di Resta was the driver of the day for me.. Even though he finished in 4th and deserved to be on the podium he showed us what he is made of.. A late race drop in pace and maybe a misjudged pit stop caused him a sure shot 3rd place.. Still this equals his best finish yet and there's a lot more to come from him..

Massa had a disastrous outing and wasn't able to really to show us the pace he had in Practice.. Charles Pic finished ahead of Gutierrez and that's surely a good sign for the team.. Max Chilton celebrates his 22nd birthday today.. Happy Birthday Max!

Season so Far:

Thats the first 4 races of the season done and its clear now that Red Bull and Lotus are the fastest.. Ferrari are right up there too.. Mercedes have the qualifying pace and need to look at improving their race pace and get on the podium and win races..Mclaren! results don't really prove anything for them.. They really need to improve over the next 3 weeks and come back stronger in Spain.. Force India have had a good first few races even though they had a non finish in Malaysia.. Right now they are ahead of Mclaren in the championship and that's surely going to give them a confidence boost going into the European leg of the season..

In the second half of the grid Torro Rosso are leading the Sauber team.. Sauber has not shown even the slightest of signs of the team they were last year..  Need to improve greatly.. Williams are having another disastrous season with not a single point scored out of 4 races.. Lets hope Spain changes their fortune, after all the win in Spain last year alone gave the team a third of their overall points haul for the season.. Marussia's Bianchi has given the team a lot of hope to finish ahead of the Caterham's.. His season so far has bought him a lot of positive attention and that's only going to get better as the season progresses..

3 weeks until Spain and that's quite a long break.. Many teams still have a lot to prove.. Red Bull and Lotus are the only ones who can be relaxed for now before they continue their excellent season so far..

Kimi please stay at Lotus and don't move elsewhere.. Lotus is the only team where Kimi can be KIMI..

Enjoy the days ahead and be sure to catch up on F1.. See ya all in 3 weeks.. :)

2013 Bahrain Grand Prix Preview

Another back to back race weekend, this time the F1 circus lands in Bahrain for the 2013 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix amidst a lot of violence in Bahrain especially in the city of Sakhir, where the race is held on the BIC.. Just like last year and the year before that, a lot of violent anti-F1 demonstrations have formed a dark cloud over the Grand Prix.. Last year the race eventually went ahead even though a lot of people from the F1 paddock were against it..

So coming to this year's race there is a lot to play for, both in terms of championship and in showing which team has the upper hand, before the 3 week break after which the European season begins.. The circuit is characterized by long straights and quite a few fast corners coupled with high track temperatures.. After being criticized highly Pirelli have decided to tweak their tire choices for the weekend and are bringing in Medium and Hard compound tires dropping the originally planned soft tires.. Good decision for sure after looking at the rate at which the softs degrade and drop off the pace..

This is what Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery had to say ahead of this week's race, "Bahrain was one of the very few circuits that was entirely new to us in competition last year, although we know it well from testing. It’s one of the most demanding tracks of the year for the tyres, mostly because of the high ambient and track temperatures. We expect about three stops per car, although we’ll have to wait to get some running in on Friday before we can look at the data and make a more accurate prediction. One of the main challenges of racing in Bahrain is that the track evolution is very hard to predict, depending on how much sand is blown onto the circuit. From what we saw last year though, there will be plenty of scope for different race strategies, which can even allow drivers who have not qualified as well as they hoped to recover during the Grand Prix."

Kimi Raikkonen who scored his first podium for Lotus here in Bahrain, Vettel and Grosjean took the other two spots, has good memories from last year.. He says "Obviously, it was a good race for us as a team last year. It was my first podium for Enstone, and we had a good fight all the way. We took a gamble during qualifying, and it didn’t work out well for us. This meant we missed out on the top ten, but we managed to use our tyres pretty well in the race and we ended up fighting for the top step of the podium, which is always a good thing.I like (the Sakhir circuit). I’ve had some nice races there and picked up some good points although I’ve never won. It’s a little bit different from others we visit and it’s quite nice to be out there in the sand! Wherever you look around the track you can just see sand in the distance and you notice it in the paddock too. It’s a circuit where I’ve never won before, so maybe this year I’ll change that. It is not easy to find a good set-up as you do experience the track surface changing over the weekend and sometimes the wind can affect the balance of the car too. It’s one of the more tricky places to get the car exactly right, but at least you don’t often have to worry about rain!"

Last year's race winner Sebastian Vettel is fit and ready for this weekend's race.. He says "The positive of back-to-back races is that on the Friday of the second race, you get into the rhythm quickly. You save time by travelling direct from one race to the next and can adapt to the time zone a bit quicker, as you don‘t have to travel so far. The only thing is that there‘s not much time for physical and mental recovery after the first race. I make the most of the Monday after the first race, in terms of relaxing and recovery. On the Tuesday, I do some easy training in the gym or some badminton, to keep the body and mind in correct mode. It‘s important that the race calender is well balanced so that drivers can get proper rest periods in order to be able to push 100 percent at each event. This means that sometimes it is good to have back-to-back races and then some longer breaks. The circuit in Bahrain? The corners can fool you and lead to errors because the track is very wide and quite often the apex of the corner is not obvious. For example the apex of Turn 14 is hidden as you approach it.

Mclaren driver Sergio Perez, who has been publicly urged by his team to improve his performance, is looking to use this race to prove how good he can be.. He says  "The Bahrain Grand Prix circuit has plenty of run-off and a good combination of high- and low-speed corners. The challenge for the drivers comes from the constantly evolving nature of the corners, and dealing with the sand – which gets blown onto different areas of the track from the surrounding desert. With two DRS zones, I think we should see some decent racing: the two best overtaking opportunities are into the Turn One and Turn Four hairpins. They’re both good places to attack – you can force another driver onto the inside line and then attack on the exit, when they’re more vulnerable. The second DRS zone will mainly be used to close the gap down to the car in front, before attacking again along the pits straight.

Ross Brawn must be very happy with how is team is going this season.. Mercedes have good pace overall but need to improve in those little places to win races.. Brawn says "With three race weekends under our belts, Bahrain will be the final race of the season-opening quartet. With very different track conditions at each venue, this should give us a good understanding of the car that we have to work with for the rest of the season. The performances so far have been pleasing and perhaps even beyond our pre-season expectations however there is work to be done. We have two main areas to focus on; we must improve the reliability and we have to lift our performance to find that extra couple of tenths to our fastest competitors. And of course, that's a moving target to make the challenge even tougher. A strong two car finish will be our target this weekend, and we want to see both Nico and Lewis in a position to score not only points but podiums regularly. We've had a taste of success already this season and the slight feeling of disappointment with third place in China is our motivation."

Remi Taffin from Renault F1 gives us insights on the engine set up for this race.. He says  "Sakhir sits in the middle of the table for the demands put on the engine, with drivers at full throttle for 50% of the lap in the race and 57% in qualifying. However the high ambient temperatures and low humidity are the main challenges for engines in Bahrain. The hot conditions mean that the bodywork may have to be slightly opened to aid the cooling configuration, while the aridity increases pressure within the cylinder chamber, which can cause internal failure. We can counteract this by tuning the engine.

Adrian Sutil  from  Force India  will be looking at scoring good points this race and making up for the loss incurred from the last two races... He says  "The race in China was very short. I had a little incident with Paul early on, but we spoke about it, and there’s no problem. For the next few laps I was catching up the cars in front and then (Esteban) Gutierrez just missed his braking point and crashed into my rear. It’s frustrating, but what can you do? He will learn so there are no hard feelings. Hopefully he will not do it again. It’s never easy, but I think we can learn quite a lot out of the race. The pace was not so good at the beginning, but much better at the end. We have to understand why. Paul got some good points for the team, but we lost some pace this weekend in general, and there were quite a few quick cars who didn’t finish the race. So we have to get a move on in Bahrain! It should be better for us there. Do I enjoy the Sakhir track? I like it, yes. With a good car I like almost every circuit. The track is not one of the most difficult ones, but it has a lot of big braking points, so you need a strong car on the brakes. The heat is very different to China, with very high temperatures, and also there’s a different combination of tyres."

Giedo van der Garde from Caterham is another driver who has good memories from this circuit.. He says "Back to Bahrain which is another circuit I have quite a bit of experience at, most recently last year in GP2 when I finished the feature race on the podium, so it’s a track that holds good memories for me. It’s quite a technical circuit that evolves a lot as the weekend progresses. It’ll be very sandy on Friday but with every lap that’s completed it rubbers in and the grip levels improve a lot - that’s important in each session, particularly quali as you need to time your run to make the most of the track evolution so strategy will be really important all weekend. Coming straight after China, the race in Bahrain is also a chance for me to get back to the performance levels I want to be racing at. China was a pretty tough weekend, but I’ve had a couple of days to recharge since leaving Shanghai and after the race we had a very good debrief and we’ve identified a few areas we’ll work on this weekend in Bahrain. Since announcing my F1 drive I’ve been really clear that the first few races were always going to be tough for a rookie, but it’s all part of the learning process so I’m as positive as ever and looking forward to getting back to work.

With a dark cloud looming over this race, all F1 fans hope the matter is settled and we get to watch a great race with the action just on track and not elsewhere..

There is a lot to look for this weekend.. Will the tires surprise us even more? Will we have a new winner this season? Will Vettel extend his lead or can Kimi and Nando catch up? Not too long to go before we find out who finishes this part of the season high.. My bet is on Red Bull and Lotus to be strong and the team that spoils the Renault party will most probably be Ferrari.. Enjoy the race thoroughly and have a great weekend :)

2013 Chinese Grand Prix Review

Welcome to Shanghai, China for the 3rd race of the 2013 Formula 1 season.. Coming into this race Red Bull were the most talked about the team, for obvious reasons.. The team has said that its sorted out, Seb has apologized but that will not change things between him and Mark atleast for the next few races.. Going into this race there is a lot to look forward to like the pace of Mercedes and Lotus and if Ferrari can continue to be strong..

Practice:
Friday Practice did not really show us a clear picture of who is fastest... Mercedes were fastest in the morning and Massa in his Ferrari went quickest in the afternoon.. Saturday morning and still we had no clear picture as this time it was Alonso who topped the time sheets with Mercedes and Red Bull looking quick..

Qualifying:

They call it the best hour of racing, Qualifying!! Q1 saw the usual suspects falling out the only surprise being Gutierrez's Sauber not making it into Q2.. Q2 was filled with surprises.. Webber's Red Bull was not sufficiently fueled and he was asked to stop on track.. He qualified 14th but because of not providing 1 litre sample to the FIA stewards he was disqualified and had to start from the back of the pack.. Same issue that Red Bull faced at last year's Abu Dhabi GP.. Red Bull suddenly did not look as quick as we expected them to be.. Q3 started and Vettel decided not to set a lap time.. Hamilton set the track on fire setting the fastest laptime in the process.. First pole for Mercedes after Sir Sterling Moss in the 1955 British GP.. Kimi was 2nd and Alonso in 3rd..  This was the second time that neither Red Bull started on the front row in 65 GP's..

Race:

Hamilton on pole, Raikkonen behind him, the bulls no where to be seen.. Webber decided to start from the pits so could we expect him to do what Vettel did in Abu Dhabi last year? Just a few minutes before the race and things look very interesting..

As the 5 Red Lights went off, Hamilton had a clean start wheras Kimi fell back behind the two Ferrari's before turn 1.. All 22 cars got through without an incident.. Webber came out and quickly passed the back markers before his team decided to pit him at the end of lap 1 to get the soft tires out of the way.. That is a very different strategy but there is no harm in that considering he started from the pits..

With the DRS enabled the Ferrari's were catching up to Hamilton and at the end of lap 4 both Alonso and Massa got past Lewis on the main straight.. Lewis complained of understeer in his car... The two Force India's almost took each other out before the final turn and gave us some wheel to wheel action..

As expected the softs didn't last very long and teams were already making pitstops.. Both the Mercedes cars were the first ones to come in.. Followed by Alonso, Raikkonen, Massa and the rest..

Gutierrez braked late on the back straight and rammed into the back of
Sutil's car.. Although Sutil made it to the pits it was game over for both of them..

After lap 8 Those who started on the mediums, Vettel, Hulkenburg, Di Resta, Button, Perez, Vergne and Bottas, stayed out and made the most of the pit stops and all of them were in the top 10 with Hulkenburg leading from Vettel and Button..

With the tires at the right temperatures the top 4 starters started catching up the non stoppers whose tires were falling off the pace..  Lap 14 the Hulkenburg and Vettel pit for a fresh set of mediums.. Vergne and Webber collide and that damaged Webber's front wing who pit later that lap.. Vergne spun and continued without any issues.. Webber's race went from bad to worse when he had issues with his right rear tyre and ended up stopping on track because the wheel came off.. Tough luck mate!

There was action up and down the field with Raikkonen almost taking out Perez, both continued with only minor damage to the Lotus's nose..

After 20 laps the only non stoppers were the two Mclaren's.. The updates seem to have worked, atleast in terms of managing the tires..  Rosberg came in for the 4th time and this time decided to retire his car due to a mechanical issue.. Not a good welcome back to China for him..

With half the race done the running order was Vettel, Alonso, Hulkenburg, Button (who finally pit), Hamilton and Raikkonen.. No one had any idea on who could win this race as things looked very close although Alonso had the best chance of winning..

Alonso got past Vettel and both Hamilton and Raikkonen got past Button.. Vettel pit for another set of mediums and choosing to hold off the softs until his last stint.. With another set of pit stops yet to be done it was Alonso leading from Hamilton and Raikkonen.. Vettel got past 3 cars on his fresh set of tires..

Hamilton and Raikkonen pit for the the final time for mediums obviously.. Now it was a case of managing their tires and holding off Vettel and Button from taking their podium places..  With fresher set of tires Hamilton was catching Kimi.. Alonso was comfortably cruising in the front leading by almost 20 seconds and eventually did his last pitstop on lap 40, coming out right behind Vettel who still had to stop for softs.. Alonso  didn't wait long to regain the lead and got past Vettel into turn 1 on the very next lap..

At the back of the grid it was the two Maurissa's who were again ahead of the two Caterham's..  Bianchi leading that pack as expected.. At the front Button gave a tough time to Hamilton and didn't let him past that easily..

Lap 50 Button pit for softs and fell back to 7th.. But took advantage of the additional grip and quickly got past Massa for 6th.. A lap later Vettel came in for softs and because of the quick pit stop he could come out in 4th ahead of Di Resta.. And this was a very good idea.. Vettel was fast, very fast indeed.. He caught up to Hamilton very quickly and on the last lap was just a second behind him.. It looked like Vettel was going to take the last podium position, but he went was too late on the brakes and that cost him.. But Hamilton held him off for second..

Meanwhile Alonso took his 31st win, a win after 13 starts.. That's gotta feel good.. Kimi had a great race barring his start and took the flag after Alonso and was followed by Hamilton and Vettel, with Button taking 5th...

So all in all a good race for everybody except for the non finishers, Webber, Sutil, Gutierrez and Rosberg..
Bianchi again proved to us that the Marussia is faster than the Caterham and he is the best of the Rookies in a back marker.. Mercedes have proved to us that they can be quick and have good race pace and just need that little bit more to win a race..

Ricciardo had a great race finishing in 7th in front of Di Resta in the lone Force India.. Massa's performance drastically reduced over the race.. He was in 2nd after the first lap and the race didn't go well for him after that.. Ferrari will have to look into what went wrong and improve to make sure that both cars finish well and fight for the Championship..

After the race Webber was handed a three place grid penalty for his collision with Vergne where as Gutierrez was handed a 5 place grid penalty for his collision with Sutil.. Rightly handled by the FIA..

As far as the championship is concerned its Vettel leading Raikkonen and Alonso.. The three just covered by 9 points and as for the Constructors its Red Bull leading Ferrari by just 5 points..

Less than a week before the teams are ready for the race in Bahrain, another back to back race weekend.. It is the last race before the European leg starts.. Teams will want to finish this part of the season on a high before heading for the races across Europe.. Lets see how the next race turns out.. Have a great week :)
